Rodgers and Hart’s comedic musical in 1938, I Married an Angel, brought about a lot of laughs – and a hit song that has stood the test of time: “I’ll Tell the Man in the Street.” Down on his luck, the musical is about a banker who decides that the perfect woman for him would be an angel. Except when he finds his angel, he realizes that her perfection is a little too hard to handle.
The musical did not lose momentum after its initial reveal. Additional productions were launched in 1964, 1977, and 1986. And, because the music was such a hit, a concert series was presented in 1995, 2000, and as recently as 2019. I Married an Angel made it into film in 1942 and onto the radio in 1952.
With a score of 12 compositions, this one – “I’ll Tell the Man in the Street” has stood out among the rest. With lyrics like, “That you and I are sweethearts / I’ll shout it out / From the roof / I’ll give the papers proof… And when I’ve said all I’ll say / You may be old and gray / But you can’t get away from me,” it is no wonder it has caught the attention of stars like Kristin Chenoweth on her 2001 solo album and the infamous Barbra Streisand who recorded this song on her debut solo album back in 1963.
This composition by Richard Rodgers with lyrics by Lorenz Hart is scored for piano, vocals, and chords; the transposition and digital playback are also supported.
