FOLIO: Three for Three
Flute, Clarinet and Bassoon: Three for Three was named simply because it is three movements for three players. One features an opening motive of a major second, and it is this interval, with its associated rhythm, that is the driving force of the first and last portions of the movement. The middle section of One (the piece is ABA form) features the opening motive of the third movementâ??s theme. In Two, gently undulating rhythms provide a backdrop for the flute, which contains most of the melodic content. Three begins with all voices in unison on the main theme, which then breaks into a propulsive minimalist section. A fugato is heard with this theme as the subject prior to the movementâ??s end.
